Ingredients
Base

2lbs cooking apples (Bramleys), peeled, cored and cut into chunks
grated rind and juice of 1 lemon
4oz caster sugar
Topping
3oz butter
4oz plain flour
2oz mixed nuts, chopped - flaked almonds, hazlenuts, walnuts
To serve
Whipped cream / cream

Method
1. Toss apples in juice and rind of lemon, and sugar. Place in shallow ovenproof dish.
2. Make the crumble topping; Rub butter into flour, stir in the sugar and nuts. Spoon over the apples and press down.
3.Bake at 190ºC 40 mins until crumble is golden brown and the apples are soft.
4. Serve with cream or custard.

I think I like anything with a crumble on it. I happen to love cinnamon, so that always goes into whatever crumble topping I'm making. You could probably put a crumble on an old shoe, and I'd eat it.
I might try that, see if you do!!
With what you said in baked into it.

I was looking at the ingredient just now... We do our crumbles slightly differently, even with Bramleys. The sugar (usually demerara) goes into the crumble mixture not the fruit!
Demerara mixed into the crumble mixture would be yummy. I think the lemon and apple would be too sharp without any sugar though.

my husband comes from a family that didn't use sugar much. I have a niece (who is now 21?) who I have seen take a lemon out of the fruit bowl, peel it as though it was an orange and eat it. straight up. nothing added. And she did it as though it was perfectly normal.
