Asian sauces

The eight Asian sauces to keep in your pantry

I got most of them, except XO (don't know it) and hoisin (too sweet)

I normally also have Ketjap manis for Indonesian food and several types of sambal
I have all of them apart from XO which I'm not familiar with in the uk is £15 for 220grams!
And I have to make my own black bean sauce, I've never had the pre-made because they're all gluteny!

Quite glad it didn't add anything to my ever expanding list of ingredients to bring back with me this year 😂

XO is typically a bit pricey ( a good one anyway) as it contains minced dried scallops - a lot of it by percentage.

A great way to dip your toe in the waters with it is to make some scrambled eggs with prawns with it.

I'd add one more to this list - some kind of 'mala' sauce.

Mala is the quite distinct taste of Sichuan, so a combo of the Sichuan peppercorn and chili. It's become more widely known in the past decade outside China and was a bit of a craze here for a bit. It's also been popularised more by cooking writers such as Fuchia Dunlop. Now there are loads of Sichuan Hotpot restaurants in Singapore and elsewhere.

Oh for the love of god Moss, what are you doing to me? My mouths watering and now I need to buy more ingredients 😱

Ok I can see why it's expensive now.
It's gluten free 👏 so it's in my basket and I'm going to order it as a treat for my return to Blighty.
Feedback please when you get it and try it.
Meanwhile I will keep an eye out in our chinese market. But comms are a problem. The Chinese shop owners/managers don't speak English and their Zambian staff don''t eat the stuff :)
And labelling is in Chinese.
And don't get me wrong, I love going there

If I wasn't a coeliac I would love that. Especially coming home with gawd knows what and trying it out.

I've find pictures very useful, a few screen shots of different brands.

Looks to me like there are many XO sauces out there so they might recognise the pic?
