My OH had decided he wants a coffee bean grinder for his birthday in March after trading an article on the guardian.

Everything you need to make great coffee – and the kit that’s not worth your money

Does anyone have any recommendations please?
Budget, I guess AUD$200-300 which is about £100-£150.

We have an electric blade grinder and have always used that until now.

We've got the very Bodum cafetiere mentioned in the article, but that's as far as coffee making goes in this house.

I got a glass bodum (2 actually, small and big) and a stainless insulated French press (ideal for travelling) and an aeropress plus filter holder & bags for pour over coffee. The latter goes straight onto a thermoscan.

I use a manual burr grinder.
2 reasons -
I had no access to power when I bought it and the ground coffee here is not of very good quality

I've always had a stainless steel burr grinder with adjustable grind setting. Mine lasted 20 years before the motor gave out and that was partially my fault. Cuisinart brand.

It’s from ATK, and it’s an excellent review of burr and blade grinders, but what I really like about it is that it dispels the myth of the superiority of burr-ground coffee to blade-ground/chopped coffee. Turns out, the reason all the professionals prefer burr grinders is ease of use in a commercial setting (one-touch walk-away operation), not because it brews a “better” cup than a blade grinder. Blind taste test after blind taste test with coffee professionals and laypeople alike proved, again and again, that there was a split among tasters between the two methods, with no clear winner on taste.

I have the dirt-cheap Krups blade grinder - I think I paid $12 for it years ago. The only thing I do differently is I shake it constantly for the 15-second grind time I use.

Agreed on the process with a blade grinder. When my burr grinder died I got a Kitchen Aid brand blade grinder at Walmart for $18. I put my beans in and and count to 20. Each count is a rock to the left or right. Grinds the same every time.

At the end of the day the only difference I can tell between either grinder is the cost. $60'ish for the burr and $18 for the blade. The difference works out to about 5 lbs. of beans... 😉

I suspect the irregularity is more my husband's inattention to be honest!
Something to be said for attention to detail. I recall trying to put a blower motor pulley rotor in a bearing block that was 1/2 of a millionth of an inch too small for an office in AZ, 128°F in the shade, while they're all waiting for A/C. Equipment matters... 😉

yeah - I don't think that is something I am going to change in him sadly.

I have just used our monthly 10% to get the best deal I could on a burr grinder... thank you TastyReuben
Guess I will now have 2 spice grinders.

And this issue has only existed since he took over grinding the beans. I never had an irregular coarseness to the grind that I have frequently seen with his grinding

I got this one
