I’ve finally got to the age where I feel I can make a confession...... I really don’t like/enjoy a barbecue. I feel this must make me some sort of freak? I love being outdoors and particularly eating outside but I’ve never hosted or actually attended a barbecue that I have honestly enjoyed and thought the food was amazing. Maybe it’s because I’m not a huge lover of meat/meaty dishes (not vegetarian but once a week is more than enough for me meat wise) and most seem to be meat mountain affairs. Whatever it is the slightly charred sausages, and dry chicken breasts, pasta salads etc just don’t seem to do it for me.

Today I cooked a spatchcock chicken and made a selection of salads, carried them out to the patio and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

So, am I alone in the barbie apathy or do any of you feel the same?

It a palava and I have a tendency to agree with you. There are limits to what you can BBQ - but on the other hand, that charcoal charring is the real treat and unless you have some sort of indoor set-up its hard to replicate.

I agree that BBQs tend to be meat oriented and like you I don't eat a lot of meat.

I love good grilled food, but I do get "smoked out" sometimes after eating a lot of long cooked, smoked bbq more than once in a while. That is, the smoke flavour tends to take over everything if not done in moderation. Grilling and proper BBQ are 2 separate beasts, however.

Like Detroitdad said, the dry chicken was not cooked or prepared properly. Most very lean meats need to be brined before grilling or q'ing.

You might like the way my wife tells me that I enjoy grilling. :scratchhead:

We often grill 2 veggies or more, and just a smaller serving of meat or fish. I like to do grilled Vidalia onions (simply cut into thick slices and drizzled with evoo and s&p before grilling), or various kinds of mushrooms - usually marinated, or other veg like corn grilled while still in the husk, then peeled and rubbed in salted butter, or asparagus tossed with evoo and minced garlic.

The next time that I make grilled portabella mushrooms stuffed with wilted spinach, minced garlic, chopped tomatoes, and fresh mozzarella cheese I'll take a picture. The larger caps are bigger than my hand, so one stuffed cap served with a starchy side and a salad, and it's a meal.

Buckytom have you tried this, I always do it when I do a BBQ. Husk the corn, cut into 2 or 3 pieces, I rub butter over the corn, this sprinkle salt over it, then double wrap in tin foil. Then cook it on the BBQ. Man it's the best way to do corn.

You know what? I think you guys over the pond know all about how to BBQ/grill. You have been doing it much longer than we have. When I was younger nobody even had a BBQ. They are popular now but I don't think we have the heritage.

Those grilled vegetables sound lovely. I want one of those huge mushrooms that you do... :hungry:

No, but I will have to give it a go. Love grilled corn.
If you grill the corn just right it intensifies the nutty, sweet corn flavour.

C'mon over. I hope to be making some by the end of this week.

I've had an invitation to New Zealand and to the USA tonight. Most invites I've had in a long time. Things must be looking up. :)

We do a bbq for just the 2 of us. One time we started with a few mussels, the main was a shoulder of lamb which was marinated overnight, served with salad potatoes- par boiled then on skewers to reheat and veggie kebabs, courgette, red onion, pepper, mushrooms, corn cobs cut to easy to chew size. Prawns also bbq very well so it doesn't have to be meat heavy.

Any bbq I have been to has been burgers and/or sausages, very little imagination.
