I am a lover of sweet potato pie as a side dish especially during the holidays. I can remember my mother making this dish without any added sugar, and it still tasted great. A little bit of pineapple juice would be added to the mixture and rings of pineapple would be placed on the top before placing it in the oven. However, I have some family members who like to add sugar to their sweet potato pie. This tends to make the pie a bit too sweet, in my opinion, and I prefer it done without any added sugar since the potatoes are already sweet. The pineapple itself contains sugar.

So, how do you like to make your sweet potato pie, with or without sugar?

Oh my goodness, I've never heard of this! I wouldn't as I find sweet potato over powering already and I do like sugar, but not pineapple for some reason. I can't imagine how it would taste, but I'm not used to it. I once had a sweet potato pie where I was staying in a resort and it was so sweet, I couldn't eat it and it put me off eating sweet potatoes for a very long time.

Sugar is one of the main ingredients that you'd add to it!

I can't for the life of me, see why anyone wouldn't!!

Yes, I used to add sugar to my sweet potato pie. That's the way I was taught to make it. Now, I add a sugar substitute. I also add cinnamon, nutmeg and natural vanilla extract. My mom now adds maple syrup to her pies.

I have never heard of adding pineapple juice or pineapple to sweet potato. I don't think I would like that very much.

Over the past 12 or 13 years, I've been adding bourbon to my sweet potato pies.

It seems to give them a wonderful heavenly flavor & taste!! Everyone who has tried it likes it!! The alcohol cooks out of it, but you are left with the heavenly taste of bourbon in the pies!! :hungry:

I usually add just a little bit of sugar to the sweet potato pie in order to give it a slightly sweeter taste. I don't normally like sweet food but when I do eat it, I want it to be extremely sweet but not overbearing. In which case, when I make sweet potato pie, I give it sugar to have that extra sweet kick.

My aunt in law just made a sweet potato dish with crumbled brown sugar and butter on top. It 2 as not a pie, but I bet the brown sugar would taste amazing in a pie too. I wonder what the addition of apples and cinnamon would taste like? I just thought of that after reading that you add pineapple to yours.

I add sugar to my sweet potato pie when making it as that is how I was taught to make it. I can see adding maple syrup to the mixture but not pineapple, I like pineapples but not with my sweet potatoe pie.

I'm weird about texture and I generally don't like pie. Maybe if I had a good sweet potato tart I'd like that better, but generally when I do cook sweet potato I like to take out some of the sweet and make them more savory. I either roast them or sautee them (sometimes I make fries/chips), but I add a pinch of salt and lots of smoked paprika. I LOVE smoked paprika.

I consider myself a pretty decent cook on a good day and for some reason I have NEVER been interested in making a sweet potato pie. It seems such a big thing for most people in my country preparing a big lunch or dinner but for some reason I have never been inclined to try it. I love sweet potatoes and I honestly don't like to do much to take away from it's natural flavour. I've played around with it with pineapple and other simple garnishes but never a pie.

Having said all that, I would not want to add sugar if I did try a sweet potato pie.

I try not to add sugar where I can avoid it or supplement it for something that's a tad more healthy. I totally understand what you're saying. Depending on what ingredients you use in the pie you may very well be able to avoid adding sugar.
