Lamb shanks tasted too gamey

So I tried lamb shanks for the first time around a month ago, and I loved it. I tried it in a Greek restaurant, braised with bell peppers, zucchini and tomatoes.

After that, I thought I might try cooking them myself. I braised them in a red wine based sauce with some tomatoes and other vegetables. Unfortunately, it came out to be much, much more gamey than the one I ate in the restaurant. The gamey flavor basically overpowered all other flavors in the dish, and my family found it cloying.

I threw out the brown stuff that came out when it first boiled, then I slow cooked it for around 8 hours. Did I just get bad meat, or did I do something wrong?
