Hi,
I am a 66 years old man who enjoys cooking but I do have my moments of pedantry so please bear with me.

I have a couple of loose bottomed tart tins. Does anybody know what the 4 small holes ( 2 on either side, diametrically opposite each other ) on the loose bottom are for? I have tried the usual search methods and even asked my 90 year old neighbour to no avail.

It is probably so trivial that it confounds even my own pedantry but I would appreciate an answer.

Thanks

I have a tin with quite a lot of holes in the bottom. It helps keep the base of the tart crisp. But these are so tiny I am not sure that is what they are for.

does the round "side" expand like a (US?) version spring-form pan?
if not, are the holes in line with the side flange - i.e. poke thru the holes to slide the sides off the bottom?

No, it is not a springform type tin. Also, to clarify, there are no holes in the ring ( fluted ) half of the tin.
