Recipe Pickled tomatoes

Ingredients:

1 kg tomatoes, preferably green
1 medium onion
4 cloves garlic (one for each 500cc jar)
1 tsp salt (per jar)
1 tsp peppercorns (black, white, red, green) per jar
1 tbsp sugar per jar
500 mls white vinegar
500 mls white wine vinegar
few sprigs of oregano
few basil leaves

Method:
  1. Wash the tomatoes and thinly slice the onion.
  2. Slice each clove of garlic into thin strips and place in the jar along with the salt, peppercorns and sugar. Now add the tomatoes, interspersed with a few slices of onion, until the jar is almost full.
  3. Heat the vinegars together with the herbs and pour over the tomatoes in each jar. Seal tightly with lid.
  4. Leave for 2-3 weeks before consuming.

Looks good! Not that I have any green tomatoes...

But what are the strips of red? Are they sweet peppers? I couldn't see anything like that in the recipe.
