Radishes and Radish Cake

I used to make radish cake when I lived in Las Vegas and could get the radish.

Radish cake
Ha, daikon is very similar or possibly the same vegetable per the article. We use that to make a daikon/carrot Asian salad. The description reminded me of the first time we used it. My husband was grating the daikon and the 4 pugs in my avatar were still with us, and were meandering around the kitchen/family room since daddy was messing with food. I was on the couch and my nose started twitching with this unpleasant smell. Since I couldn't see all of the kitchen floor, told Craig he better look around and make sure someone hadn't left a "present" on the floor for him to step in. Fortunately, it tasted a lot better than it smelled.

Next time I get the urge for a dim sum meal I'll have to try this.

I'm thinking of giving it a go with turnips. Can't get the daikons here.

Somewhere along the years, I found a couple of sites that said to substitute our salad radishes for the daikon. We do that sometimes if we want the slaw but don't want to go to the Asian market.

I'm 99% sure the radishes used in radish cake are daikon/mooli radish. Long, white and dense, they're deliciously crunchy and mustardy. I can always find them in the Chinese market here in Caracas, but occasionally they're available in supermarkets as well. I've never worked out what Venezuelans use them for, but still.
I use them for oriental-style coleslaw and for a delicious chutney made with mooli, crushed walnuts, a little vinegar, sugar and fresh green chile.
Popular in Indian cuisine, as well as Chinese (and probably other SE Asian cuisines).

Ocado usually have mooli.

Last time I bought a couple it was for a recipe called 'Galbi Jjim'
I diligently followed the recipe to the letter which involved cutting fat carrots into balls and the same with the mooli.
It was only after I'd slavishly followed the recipe instructions I realised I was spending absolutely yonks cutting mooli into balls shaped like.. radishes... 🤣

Bought radishes the next time and ditched the carrots, much nicer 😆

Braised beef short ribs (Galbi-jjim: 갈비찜)

That one looks better than mine. I'm going to have to explore serving options. Had a piece earlier pan fried on a hamburger with a sunny side up egg. Pretty good for lunch!
