Raised Bed Gardens

I'd love to grow some things in a raised bed garden starting in the spring but I know so little about the method.

Anyone have experience? Is there a website or even a book that would teach someone with a totally black thumb how to be successful with that kind of garden?

I'd also like suggestions on what kinds of things an inexperienced gardener should think about trying first.

We had a raised bed garden last year and honestly, I felt like I had to water everything a whole lot more just so that my veggies would get watered. The water wasn't getting to the roots so I had to soak the soil. Maybe I did something wrong.
