As I believe I mentioned earlier, the cat in the forefront of my current avatar image crossed the Rainbow Bridge last November.

I now have a new cat, a rescue whom I've named Bjorn. He arrived with the name of Eugene, but he's not a Eugene. He's a Bjorn. Around 15 pounds of cat. He's about 3 years old - I wanted an adult - and he's FIV +, which means his immune system is on the weaker side. But he's friendly. I am guessing he escaped from someone's car while traversing North Carolina, where he was found and shipped up north to be fostered. There could be some other event in his past that led him to the homeless life, but he's settled in here and isn't talking about it.

Go Bjorn! And thank you so much for giving him a home!

That's great. And he looks like a Bjorn most definitely.

Living a few blocks from a cattle and horse ranch, I have a different view of rats. They are NOT pets. Lucky for me, we have feral cats in the neighborhood that keep the field rats under control.

I need to grab a picture of one of the feral cats that spends a lot of time in my yard, now that Teddy is gone. It seems to have concluded that I am not a major threat to it, so even though it keeps some distance from me, it doesn't run off. During the worst part of the drought, I sometimes put a bowl of water out for it.

I understand wild rats can cause a lot of damage, however they are also good at cleaning up food waste that dirty people drop on the floor. Domesticated are warm, snuggly, affectionate and intelligent.

I've had friends with domesticated rats, and they are pretty cool. I'd still rather have a dog.

Field rats do a lot of damage. They love to chew wires, and build nests in cars (engine compartments and hidden cavities). They are known to start fires due to both of the above habits.

We had an idiot neighbor who was always complaining about the feral cats (and at least a dozen other things), and we kept telling her they are a good thing. Well, she just could not stand having "stray cats" in HER neighborhood, so she called animal control and had them all rounded up (and as a a result, euthanized). The field rats moved in en masse. She never understood why nobody in the neighborhood liked her.
