I was out today scoping out the bounty that nature will be offering up for the summer. While not quite ready to eat, I thought I would show you some of the local foods to come. Perhaps I could get some interesting recipes to try.

They are (In the order I added them): Salmon berries, huckleberries, oregon grapes, and wild blueberries.

I`ve never heard about these berries before, much less cooked with them, but they are definitely interesting and should be interesting to cook with. I must check up on them and see if they are available or grow here in Europe.

if the names are in the same order as the photos, then I recognise the 3rd one as an ornamental garden plant (!) and the blueberries are commonly found in Europe. My OH and I feasted on them whilst cycling through Finland two autumn's ago... possibly had one too many! But I am also familiar with them in the UK through all of my childhood as well, along with many over looked berries such as crowberries (Empetrum nigrum) often found growing with wild blueberries and cranberries.

You're one very lucky individual! I'd love to have some of these growing in my backyard much less experiment in the kitchen with them. Enjoy your soon to be fresh pickings.

The "Oregan grapes" plant pictures in the opening post is a common garden plant (Mahonia Japonica). I have not tried the berries but I do know the flowers are sweet (and safe) to eat.

Last year I collected an abundance of blackberries and apples fom the wild. I also find plenty of wild fennel and wild rocket locally. I've also used wild garlic and other edible plants when I've found them.

Wherever in the world you live you shold have some edible berries, seeds, nuts and fruits available. You do need to be able to identify them and know which of them are toxic.

I've heard of huckleberries, wild blueberries, and Oregon grapes, but I've never heard of salmon berries. Maybe there called by a different name in my area. I love to see natural fruit growing wild!

I have heard of all of these because I am from the Pacific Northwest. I have tried all of the berries listed above and they are all very good. The best part is that you can find them all for free in the wild around here. Blackberries grow like crazy at my mother in laws house and so I go on a picking frenzy during the late summer. I have 4 bags left in my freezer which will become pies very soon!
