Chooks, typically heritage breeds or backyard mixed breeds, can live to be 12 yrs old or more

Wow. How amazing! Thank you. I did have the 2,3 y life span in the back of my head, no idea from where...so it is such a huge difference! Poor commercial chicken. Being exploited, aren't they.
Your chooks are anyways far better off, almost like family members, closest to someone caring for a dog...they are loved and named, taken care of lovingly.
Taking some rest in between egg laying seems all so natural and good.

12 years is fantastic!

Looking at those sun beams...and the sunlight on the grass...the colours of the sky...hauntingly beautiful.

All three taken within an hour, between 8 pm and 9 pm today.
