I wanted to make beef stew, so I bought a pack of stewing beef, salted and peppered it, and refrigerated it for cooking later. She saw the bag, and thought I was planning to grill steak. I told her I had planned to make beef stew...I would have added red wine. But, we already have a recipe for beef stew in this recipe challenge. And, she really wanted grilled steak. Home cooks need to be adaptable, and I do have whiskey, so I made a marinade instead.

Ingredients
  • ¼ cup whiskey
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup Dijon mustard
  • ¼ cup finely chopped green onion
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 dash Worcestershire sauce
  • ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 pounds steak
  • oil

Directions

1. Cut steak in large chunks. Whisk remaining ingredients together. Place steak chunks in a bag with marinade. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

2. Heat a cast iron pan to medium temperature. Spread a layer of oil in the pan, and stir some of the marinade in, Place beef chunks in the pan, Cook to desired temperature, and serve immediately.

Yum. Sounds like a teriyaki marinade.

Looks good!
I'm just confused about the cut of meat..
You didn't use your stewing beef? Or do you make a stew with steak?

I'm not sure if this is how stewing beef is sold in other parts of the world, but this is similar to the pack I picked up:

To be honest, I've usually just used sirloin, but this was already trimmed and portioned, and I wanted to save some time. "Stewing beef" is a selection of cuts of chuck or round steak, but it can include sirloin. The marinade helped soften the meat.

Not to be confused with Stewie Griffin:
