food in the news

Junk food news (also known as junk news or junk journalism) is a sardonic term for news stories that deliver "sensationalized, personalized, and homogenized inconsequential trivia",
especially when such stories appear at the expense of serious investigative journalism. It implies a criticism of the mass media for disseminating news that, while not very nourishing, is "cheap to produce and profitable for media proprietors."

    Gruyère News

I’ve mentioned before on the forum the notion that in the US, we don’t really feel obligated to honor the origination designations that other countries are apt to make and observe. Here’s another one: US-made cheese can also be called 'gruyere', court rules

    Food Fraud...

I watched a rather eye-opening video, and thought I'd share it. It was about food fraud in America, but if is happening here, it is happening everywhere.-- it mentions the UK horse-meat scandal as one example. Here is the video, and below it a link to an article from the same source for those...

    Invidious Comparison Eating (ICE)?

I read a little article today about invidious comparison eating (ICE), something I wasn’t aware of, though I’m sure I’ve both experienced and perpetrated it at some point. ICE is when you make something, others try it, and someone invariably comments, “This is good, but when I make it, I do...

Vegan casein & whey protein has now been made

I know for most people/vegans this will be good news, but I'm not so certain for the obvious implications for those allergic to dairy, but it is now possible to make casein and whey protein (two of the dairy proteins) artificially so vegan cheeses will in time become much closer to dairy...

    Restaurant Inspections

Does anyone else like to read the restaurant inspections published in their local newspaper? I love reading them, for things like this (from one of the two Subways we have in town, printed in the Wilmington News-Journal): Subway (inside Wal-Mart), 2825 SR 73 South, Wilmington, May 9...

    US Shortage of Baby Food?

When I started seeing the lamentations regarding people who felt that the shortages of baby foods would threaten starvation for their infants, I felt that old regret that so many people are so habitualized and manipulated that they don't even try to think for themselves. And there were for...

Will UK calorie counting regulations for restaurants stifle creativity?

From 6 April hospitality businesses with more than 250 employees will have to list calorie information for each dish. Items that are on the menu for less than 30 days will be exempt from the rule, but there are concerns it could stifle creativity in the kitchen. Chef warns calorie counts on...
