kitchen
A kitchen is a room or part of a room used for cooking and food preparation in a dwelling or in a commercial establishment. A modern middle-class residential kitchen is typically equipped with a stove, a sink with hot and cold running water, a refrigerator, and worktops and kitchen cabinets arranged according to a modular design. Many households have a microwave oven, a dishwasher, and other electric appliances. The main functions of a kitchen are to store, prepare and cook food (and to complete related tasks such as dishwashing). The room or area may also be used for dining (or small meals such as breakfast), entertaining and laundry. The design and construction of kitchens is a huge market all over the world.
Commercial kitchens are found in restaurants, cafeterias, hotels, hospitals, educational and workplace facilities, army barracks, and similar establishments. These kitchens are generally larger and equipped with bigger and more heavy-duty equipment than a residential kitchen. For example, a large restaurant may have a huge walk-in refrigerator and a large commercial dishwasher machine. In some instances commercial kitchen equipment such as commercial sinks are used in household settings as it offers ease of use for food preparation and high durability. In developed countries, commercial kitchens are generally subject to public health laws. They are inspected periodically by public-health officials, and forced to close if they do not meet hygienic requirements mandated by law.
Hi everybody, I'm MB and I love to cook. I'm excited about this forum to talk all things with everyone here. This looks like a great community to be a part of.
(Here is a sample of one of my latest creations)
Thank you.
I have been paining in my old digs for not having any really large mixing bowls. When I needed a big mixing bowl, I would use a kettle.
Now that I have all this space in my new digs, I've decided to do something about that and ordered two Anchor Hocking 4 Qt. glass mixing bowls which I'll...
Ok, I have a standard double-bowl stainless steel kitchen sink, and looking to replace that. My options for sink material are stainless steel, composite, and enamel/porcelain.
I'm leaning heavily toward composite. Stainless steel doesn't look as nice and porcelain is the most expensive option...
Well, in my thrashing about with ideas for meals, I was caused to look for Slicers to thin slice Veggies and Meats. And that has left me confused between Mandoline Slicers, Guillotine Slicers and Electric Knives. Still a no go on these thrashings.
In the Mean time, I have ordered an Apple...
It got driven home today that kitchen fires happen. My next-door neighbor's kitchen, and part of the house, was destroyed today by a kitchen fire. It made me think. Am I prepared for a kitchen fire?
I have a kitchen fire extinguisher, but it is easily ten years old or older. Time to replace it...
I use my phone in the kitchen quite a bit, either to cook from a recipe that I've found or to use as a reference to look up a last-minute substitution or measurement conversion.
One of my relatives has gone as far as to install a little iPad holder that swings out from the wall and can be...
My first time making and eating these, so taste wise didn't really have a reference point. But was very happy after my first bite!!
Ingredients
500gms rib eye fillet sliced thinly
9 thin slices provolone cheese
3 crusty sourdough rolls
1 large brown onion chopped
1 green capsicum (bell...
Wasn't sure where to put this, but I've taken to grabbing a nearby stool while in the kitchen.
Waiting 10 minutes for the stand mixer to knead bread, or for eggs to boil...more and more often, I just cop a squat in the kitchen instead of going into the other room.
What about you?
Piggybacking off the "scariest" topic, what's the most useless thing in your kitchen?
You can define "useless" however you like; maybe it doesn't perform as it should, or maybe it's something you have and just never use.
For me, it's the plastic egg holder that came with my fridge - a...
