vegan
Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of any product created by or obtained from any living creature.
Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, and an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of animals. A follower of the diet or the philosophy is known as a vegan. Distinctions may be made between several categories of veganism. Dietary vegans refrain from consuming animal products, not only meat but also eggs, dairy products and other animal-derived substances. The term ethical vegan is often applied to those who not only follow a vegan diet but extend the philosophy into other areas of their lives, and oppose the use of animals for any purpose. Another term is environmental veganism, which refers to the avoidance of animal products on the premise that the industrial farming of animals is environmentally damaging and unsustainable. Interest in veganism increased in the 2010s, especially in the latter half. More vegan stores opened and vegan options became increasingly available in supermarkets and restaurants in many countries.
A bit of experimenting went on before I got this right. I adapted my usual muffin recipe, replacing egg with golden syrup. The result is surprisingly light and crumbly.
Ingredients
200 g plain flour
3 teaspoons of baking powder
75 g vegetable margarine
65g grams caster sugar
1 tsp vanilla...
I came back from a short break a few days ago to discover that my youngest son (age 27) who lives here has decided to become vegan. My youngest daughter (29) who also lives here is a pescatarian - that is, she is vegetarian but eats fish. She also eats eggs and dairy. My partner will eat most...
This is the recipe I will be using for my falafel 2nd round attempt. I liked the basic original recipe but it didn't have enough punch for my husband and my tastes, so I have adapted it.
I've yet to find an online version of the Vegistan recipe so can't credit it.

Potato and Pea Curry: a classic Indian dish which has many variations.

2 medium potatoes cubed
100g frozen peas
1 medium onion chopped
2 tbsp ginger and garlic paste (or 3 fat garlic cloves, minced and 1 thumb of ginger, grated).
2 heaped tsp hot chilli powder
1/2 tsp...
This is barely a recipe at all! But it is so delicious. Dill is the key to this humble dish. You can make this from leftovers, as I did. Its akin to 'bubble and squeak' but perhaps a little more elegant? It could be served as a starter with a yoghurt and mint sauce or as I did, as part of a...
So being allergic to dairy, I have to get creative with my chocolate recipes.
This one is based on cashew nuts and does require a high speed blender, otherwise it is exceptionally simple to make. I use nice dark chocolate when I can get hold of it. A good quality one makes for a really nice...
This is a recipe I have had for 2 decades now, going by the date on the bottom of the scanned image. We love it. It is really easy, simply, warming and filling. It is easily made vegan and with the addition of more mustard to the sauce, a mustard sauce over leeks in a potato pastry is divine...
Every time I go into the city with my husband, we stop off at the café below his work place. Whilst the soya latte leaves something to be desired, they happen to sell the most delicious raw vegan salted caramel slices. So given the current CookingBites recipe challenge is chocolate, I thought...
OK - not my recipe (from the Minimalist baker) but one I am very definitely going to make. I'll start the soaking process tonight with the cashew nuts (hopefully nothing will freeze, we have a cold spell at the moment...). Then I will report back. Edit see lower for revised recipe.
I suspect...
The recipe comes from the Middle Eastern Vegetable Cookbook with a few changes to make it closer to my tastes. We served it with caramelised onion rice & polenta cakes.

I happen to rather like mushrooms, but with my favourite recipes already uploaded I've had to look for others that take my interest and mushroom, rice and curry being amongst my favourite foods, a mushroom curry served over a bed of tasty wholegrain, brown rice ticks all the boxes. I like to...
Vegetarian Bamieh
A Middle Eastern vegan dish of potatoes and okra. (If you really must have meat in it, see my notes at the end of the recipe!)
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
2 large onions, chopped
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 ½ teaspoons turmeric
1 teaspoon baharat (mixed Arabic spices)

Every recipe for this type of flatbread calls for raw onion inside the bread. I think this makes for a harsh bite, since the process of cooking the bread doesn't fully cook the onion inside. This is why I saute the onion first before folding it inside the dough.
Ingredients:
1⁄2 teaspoon dry...
There are a number of things that need to be observed in making the perfect tattie scone. The first is that the potatoes are floury (such as King Edwards). Waxy or salad potatoes will simply not work - you need mashers, potatoes that will disintegrate if they were to be overcooked, not...
