vegetarian

Vegetarianism is the practice of abstaining from the consumption of meat (red meat, poultry, seafood, and the flesh of any other animal), and may also include abstention from by-products of animals processed for food.Vegetarianism may be adopted for various reasons. Many people object to eating meat out of respect for sentient life. Such ethical motivations have been codified under various religious beliefs, as well as animal rights advocacy. Other motivations for vegetarianism are health-related, political, environmental, cultural, aesthetic, economic, or personal preference. There are variations of the diet as well: an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet includes both eggs and dairy products, an ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs but not dairy products, and a lacto-vegetarian diet includes dairy products but not eggs. A strict vegetarian diet – referred to as vegan – excludes all animal products, including eggs and dairy. Avoidance of animal products may require dietary supplements to prevent deficiencies such as vitamin B12 deficiency, which leads to pernicious anemia.Packaged and processed foods, such as cakes, cookies, candies, chocolate, yogurt, and marshmallows, often contain unfamiliar animal ingredients, and so may be a special concern for vegetarians due to the likelihood of such additives. Feelings among vegetarians may vary concerning these ingredients. Some vegetarians scrutinize product labels for animal-derived ingredients while others do not object to consuming cheese made with animal-derived rennet. Some vegetarians are unaware of animal-derived rennet being used in the production of cheese.Semi-vegetarian diets consist largely of vegetarian foods but may include fish or poultry, or sometimes other meats, on an infrequent basis. Those with diets containing fish or poultry may define meat only as mammalian flesh and may identify with vegetarianism. A pescetarian diet has been described as "fish but no other meat". The common-use association between such diets and vegetarianism has led vegetarian groups such as the Vegetarian Society to state that diets containing these ingredients are not vegetarian, because fish and birds are also animals.

Is it difficult for you to not eat meat?

I know a vegan diet is better for you than eating meat. I also know there are plenty of non-animal proteins out there like soy and garbanzos. I went three months without touching meat or meat-flavored food. I did well for awhile, but then it seemed that I started craving sweets more. I don't...

Looking for some good, homemade, vegetarian holiday recipes

I've seen tofu turkeys and whatnot, but I really like to make homemade foods for my vegetarian guest that visits during the holidays. She doesn't get much home cooking, so I like to fuss over her. I make a few favorites for her, but I'd like to have some new stuff this time around as well. I'd...

Recipe Aromatic Vegetable Pasties with yoghurt pastry

Aromatic Vegetable Pasties with yoghurt pastry I got this recipe from the now defunct BBC Vegetarian Food Good magazine back somewhere in 1993. Originally hubby made them for us when we lived in the Lake District (England) and they have a story behind them. We didn't have a great kitchen in...

Vegetarian dishes that please meat eaters

While I don't have any plans of going full vegetarian, I do find that I feel healthier when I cut back on meat and dairy products overall. I can enjoy meals without meat just fine. I'm dating a full on carnivore who needs meat at every meal, however. This includes breakfast the majority of the...

Foods & Drinks Vegetarians should avoid.

I thought I would start a thread listing the ingredients vegetarians should avoid but may not be aware of. These being involved in the manufacture of foods & drinks that you would expect to be OK, but are in fact not, e.g. white sugar & jellies. The aim is not to scare people but to educate...

    Recipe Vegetable Lasagne

This is my grannie's recipe for vegetable lasagne. As a word of warning it is one of those that includes few quantities.... on the bright side of things she has included a rough idea on cooking time, which is unusual for my (late) Grannie. I find 3 medium carrots, 2 onions, 3 or 4 sticks of...

    Recipe Chickpea Salad

Chickpea Salad This is a rich and powerful salad which can form the main course of a cold summer lunch. It is also best made the previous day and allowed to mature. Plus it is best made with freshly cooked (slightly overdone) chickpeas. Tinned just don't it any justice. Cook the chickpeas in...
