@morning glory I am unfamiliar with Elizabeth David and had to look her up,

I wouldn't have expected you to know her - I meant its only people my age and keen cooks in the UK who would be likely to have heard about her. I didn't know about Julia Child until a few years ago.

He was great! We had the shows here too. They were great fun! Apparently he is still alive although I don't know what he is up to.

Yes...excellent article. I didn't realize that James Beard had a cooking show in the 1940s!

Apparently he has been on radio and TV until quite recently promoting "5 a day" but since his wife died he concentrates on individuals wanting to make positive lifestyle changes on a one-to-one basis. I still haven't investigated the cookery book of his that I inherited from my Mum.
