Do you have a special meal on Christmas Eve? I used to always cook a fish or seafood dish and I know that fish is a tradition in some religions and cultures.

What is your Christmas Eve favourite or traditional meal?

Usually fish on the Eve. Past Christmas Eve dinners.

It used to be fondue (by which I mean cheese, sausages, and bread), but we also open our stocking stuffers on Christmas Eve, so now we have festive appetizers and some kind of holiday-appropriate drink.

That way, there isn’t much in the way of prep or cleanup, no special equipment, etc. Fondue can be a bit of a production.

Is that stuffed clams I spy? Do you have the recipe?
I do have a recipe (I will need to write it up), but some of those are homemade and some are store bought frozen appy size clams.

Fondue sounds lovely though. Apart from preparing the fondue itself, couldn't all the bits you dip be prepared earlier. They are ysyally simply eaw vegetabkes aren't they? As I have never made a fondue I may be talking rubbish, but isn't fondue some sort of cheese melted with wine and/or alcohol. Sounds quite easy to me.

Is that just you personally or is a South African or Dutch tradition not to celebrate it with anything special? This year I doubt I will do anything special as I will likely be in my own. Maybe I will buy myself some oysters...
We don't do anything special for Christmas Eve in our house and my family didn't while I was growing up, either.

My family got together and did the whole 7 fishes +! I really wasn't big on fish. I'll eat clams raw and cooked, canned tuna, fried white flesh fish is about it. Mom would make pasta with green olive sauce, Linguine with White Clam Sauce, and Linguine and Broccoli Aglio e Olio for me on meatless holidays.

I’ve tried many dishes on Christmas Eve hoping to hit some magical sweet spot of a tradition everyone looks forward to but I’ve never found it.
I tried a side of Salmon and for a while that worked but then a family member developed a bl**dy allergy to some types of fish, not terrible, a mild allergy but it involves spending too much time on the loo!

So I tried Delia’s suggestion from yesterday year of confit duck and I did not like it. Far too much heavy greasy meat the might before the Christmas showdown!

One of the most popular so far is crispy bites, like mini spring rolls, cubed pork belly, samosas, cauliflower ‘wings’ mini chicken kievs and honey mustard sausages. That’s not much hassle - open the packets and put them in the oven!

Other popular one’s are simply pie or wagyu steak, mash and onions rings. But I don’t consider that special so lean more towards the crispy stuff!
