Chistmas Eve dinner

Fondue sounds lovely though. Apart from preparing the fondue itself, couldn't all the bits you dip be prepared earlier. They are ysyally simply eaw vegetabkes aren't they? As I have never made a fondue I may be talking rubbish, but isn't fondue some sort of cheese melted with wine and/or alcohol. Sounds quite easy to me.
Melted cheese with wine, but once you start, you’re committed until you’re done, so that means getting the sterno flame going, getting the special table out, wine poured, shots poured…it’s a whole ritual, and once you start, it requires all your attention, it’s difficult to have a nibble, open a gift, have a nibble - you’ve got to keep that cheese stirring!

No raw vegetables for us. If vegetables are included, they’re usually steamed to soften them a bit. We have bread and cooked (still hot) sausages).

Finger foods are a lot easier to prepare ahead of time, because most of what we have that way can be room temp - palmiers, pinwheels, raw vegetables and dip, meat-and-cheese tray, etc. Much easier to eat at a leisurely pace, and no cleanup beyond tossing away some Christmas-themed paper plates, and washing some wine glasses.

Blimey! I thought you just put a pot of cheesy loveliness on a burner on the table and dunked. I didn't think there was a ritual connected with it.

I know this thread is about Christmas eve...
But "gourmet" is very popular in the Netherlands. Little skillets on the table and everyone cooks their own
My brothers family has a trial run on christmas eve :)

We have a raclette set, which is similar to that.

More Kitchen Toys!!

Apparently, the last two years, that’s what we’ve done on Christmas Eve:

Christmas 2022

What did you cook or eat today (December 2023)

That’s even more work than fondue!

You start it on the stove, takes maybe 15 minutes to get it together (but beforehand, you’ve had to shred all that cheese…), and in that time, MrsT sets up the little table, gets the plates out, puts out the bread I cubed earlier and the sausages that I fried up, cut up, and have been holding in the oven, she gets the sterno holder filled and lit, pours two glasses of wine, two shots of kirsch, over to the table with the fondue, then it’s a quick toast with the shots, and from that point on, it’s stir, stir, stir, because just a few seconds after stirring, the cheese starts to stick to the bottom of the crock.

That’s not a problem with four people, because then the stirring is divided up, but for two people, somebody’s got to be in there stirring almost constantly (and that’s me).

Just a normal day here as xmas day is a huge day here. Turkey lamb and pickled pork and all the trimmings
My d.i.l is catholic and I believe they do something??. Fasting?? I.d.k

Christmas Eve is the big christmas event over here in catholic Venezuela.
Hallacas ( Venezuelan style "tamales"stuffed with an abundance of goodies, wrapped in plantain leaves), Pan de Jamón ( a brioche loaf stuffed with ham , raisins and olives) , ensalada de gallina (basically a Russian salad with chicken and mustard) and a hot sauce called picante Trujillano made with buttermilk, sweet and hot chiles, onions and Maguey flowers. There will also be a fresh salad.

Is that stuffed clams I spy? Do you have the recipe?
Here you go MG.

Some fascinating stuff here. The hot sauce sounds interesting.
