Last night, after slicing up the entire loaf of freshly made sourdough to freeze it to keep it fresh for Friday, I put the bread knife straight back into the drawer where it is kept and it got me wondering if anyone else doesn't wash their bread knife? OK - it makes the assumption that you have one and don't use sliced bread, or happen to be 2 members of CB who I know will be recoiling in horror right now (yep, I'm looking at you two :D )

The sourdough didn't have any extras (except for seeds, which went everywhere (to the point where the floor was crunchy underfoot and I had to get the vacuum cleaner out). But it did leave me wondering if you have sliced plain fresh bread, do you bother washing the bread knife?

It depends, really - if I can see visible…markings or streaks or bits of bread stuck to it, then yes, as that’s an open invitation to an ant party at our house, but if it’s the kind of bread that slices cleanly, then I don’t worry about it much at all, or I may just give it a quick wipe with a dish cloth, more to make myself feel better than anything else.

May as well post a pic of the knife:

I own two bread knives.
When I just cut up bread, straight bread-no fillings/toppings, I leave the knife out on the cutting board, because 9 out of 10 times, I'll be using that again, shortly.
Now, say it's to then cut a filled/topped bread item, it gets hand washed and dried and returned to the knife block (and the board is then washed as well).

If whatever I've sliced leaves a smear on the blade, I wash the knife. Otherwise not: it's clean as it is.
