Fast food, convenience food and food snobbery

One of my colleagues used to shop at Tesco, to make the pennies last she started going to ALDI, now she goes to LIDL. Her partner works on the roads but has had his hours changed/cut so they have less money to spend. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with ALDI or LIDL, the food is probably the same just has a different name on the packet.

We have virtually everything in Frisco from 7 prime steak houses, to Olive Garden and every fast food imaginable.

On a two-mile stretch of one road, we have McDonalds, two Wendy's, Taco Bell, Taco Bueno (way better than TB) Jack-in-the-Box, Whataburger, In-N-Out Burger, KFC, Popeye's, Arby's, and certainly more I can't think of right now.

I forgot to mention Chic-Fil-A. Actually, I probably blocked it from my mind. We have two of them on that same road. They have a "religious" following, both literally and metaphorically. The first makes them polarizing. Me, I just don't like the food, especially for what they charge for it.

Chick-Fil-A Sandwich -- a small piece of greasy fried chicken on a dry bun with three pickles. $3.05. Waffle Fries -- no seasoning... NONE! You have to add salt yourself, after the fries are cold. It all falls off. 32 OZ drink -- 30 OZ of crushed ice, two ounces of soft drink.

What beer did you like in college? My favorite beer was FREE Beer!

If I am doing heavy yard work on a hot day, something light like Coors Light burried under ice in a cooler seems to work for me. That and out on the boat in the hot sun. Otherwise, I go a bit more top shelf. Well, "went." Now it is non-alcohol beer. I hear the selection of non-alcohol beer in Yurrip, and even Canada is considerably better than in Murica. Other than in California, I never find it in bars.

At that age, yeah, whatever was available was appreciated. Where I was living at the time, Labatt was very popular.

Around here, it would have been Hudepohl (Hudy) all the way...and Little King's Cream Ale.

If you can find it, Franziskaner makes a decent NA beer. It's very hard to find around here. I had to have it ordered through a beer shop. MrsTasty had to go NA for a while and it was about all she could put up with.

I feel exactly the same way about Chik-Fil-A. Even before their bit of controversy, I never, ever understood what people liked about them. Dry sandwich, no condiments, cold fries, big jug of ice, and they want more than twice what I'd pay elsewhere? Do I have "IDIOT" stamped on my forehead?

On another paw, if one won't eat offal, is that also "food snobbery"? Just asking for a friend.. er, myself, who loves a lot of offal. But I am curious if there is a definition out there for this?
I am a fan of offal. Many traditional Cajun dishes contain offal.
Dad would make what he called Debris. It was a wonderful stew made from organ meats, (liver, kidney, heart, thymus) brain, tongue and Chitlins (small intestines) served over white rice with bread for sopping up extra gravy. "Back in the day" organ meats could be purchased for next to nothing from a slaughter house. Those delicacies were considered garbage - debris. The Debris was cooked for hours in a large cast iron dutch oven with a little dark roux for thickening, the Holy Trinity and da Pope, corn, carrots and peas for veggies.
Debris was a labor of love. All of the meats required prepping - trimming, cleaning. They came from the slaughter house not the supermarket. It would be prohibitively expensive to make a Debris today.
The one offal that I have never developed a taste for is stomach. Called Ponce. Usually stuffed. I think it is the awful smell while the stomach is boiled.
Lamb Fries and Rocky Mountain Oysters are de-lish. (lamb and bull testicles)

We had Popeye's earlier this week for the first time in a couple of years. Ate like starving animals. McD's - :yuck:
Thanksgiving '18 we went to my brother's home in Florida. My Niece has Cerebral Palsy and can not make that trip without an overnight stop. There were numerous fast food joints in walking distance of the hotel. Niece wanted McD's. She said the Big Mac was the best. Three slices of bun with two paper thin, silver dollar size pieces of mystery meat and some slop on top.
Speaking of McD's, have you seen the movie "Founder"?

College days - a stop at White Castle for a dozen on the way home after the bars closed. a hangover cure - barf up the burgers and the booze - no hangover. Sorry that is gross and disgusting but unfortunately true.

I love Chick-Fil-A. It's not hard to ask for a few mayonnaise and mustard packets. It's real chicken and I don't find it dry or greasy. The locations I have been to usually had a line of cars around the building. I get why they don't add the condiments, some people don't like mustard, some don't like mayonnaise. Much easier for customers to add their own. Can't comment about the quality of the drinks or fries. I never order soft drinks with my fast food, but then again, I only drink soda if it has booze in it. I never order combo meals, I just want the sandwich and some water. I don't like the fries at any FF restaurant, or even sit down restaurants for the most part. Unless it comes with the meal I don't want it, and even then I probably will only eat a few.

My cousin owns a Chick-Fil-A in Beaumont, TX. Yes, she and her husband are religious people, but not the "in your face" preachy kind of Christians. They do a lot of good for their community in the way of giving back and helping people in need. I go to spend Thanksgiving with them every year and they know I am agnostic, but they never try to "convert" me. They are just good people.

I'm not a fan of fast food but sometimes it's a necessary evil. One of the things that really grinds my gears about places like McD's and BK is that you walk in and look at the ad board and see a large, juicy burger, glistening lettuce and tomato with carefully applied sauce. When you sit at the table the reality is a handful of salty, cardboardlike fries hiding a miniscule burger that looks absolutely nothing like the picture of the thing you ordered.

It's called marketing.

There's a difference between that super-shiny stuff wrapped in cellophane and proper American cheese. The former is pretty useless (I don't even give it to my dog), but the latter absolutely has its place.

Here's a good read:
What Is American Cheese, Anyway?

I can't remember what chef said it, but I do remember one saying that every professional chef's dirty little secret is that they keep a brick of Velveeta available to help stabilize cheese sauces. Just a very small amount keeps a cheese sauce from breaking.

Besides, Jacques Pepin says his favorite way to eat a cheeseburger is with American cheese, that there's something "quintessentially American" about it. :)
Velveeta + Ro-Tel +Frito or Nacho chips (crisps) preferably scoop chips.
At one time the label on Velveeta read "processed cheese food"
