Any fans of horse?

I went to a restaurant in Amsterdam last week that had horse tenderloin on the menu. Absolutely delicious and quite a bit cheaper than a beef steak. Not sure why it's not more readily available.

It isn't a meat that we eat in the UK. A lot of people associate horse with riding, and ponies etc and very few will eat it. I've never tried it and im not sure I ever would. I
don't know of any place that sells it in the UK.

what does it taste like?

Never been anywhere that sells it to be honest, would try it though.

Think of chicken compared to turkey, only in this case your comparing it to beef.

horse specialised butchers at a lot of northern France markets, and horse slaughter houses are not hidden away, i don't mind horse meat ,I'm not going to say its like?
its what it is,its by the sausages in the large super markets
Since Britain had the horse meat scandal the lasagnas in lidls have never been the same!

not sure why it would be exotic or controversial,to many its normal,it was more readily available years ago in northern Europe, but as i said its not uncommon in super markets in France today!
If you see the list down the left hand side. Has to fit somewhere.

Is that because they took the horse out or put more in ?

I have never had it and not sure I could eat it knowing it was horse. I would probably taste it if I didn't know what it was. I know people who have eaten and they said the same thing, that it was really quite good.

My father was a trainer of race horses and they say that the meat of a race horse is the best because of the fodder given to them. They are fed oats that are imported (from Australia, I think) and some grass. When a horse figures in an accident, it is butchered the meat sold in the race track. My father would buy some kilos of horse meat for my mother to prepare in different dishes. And one of the best is a tenderloin steak. The horse meat has a gamey taste unlike beef that tastes ordinary. But if you are not fond of exotic meat, I guess you wouldn't like horse meat.

Here in our place I had not seen they are selling meat of a horse or heard people eating the meat of a horse. That is why I had no idea about this thing only when I just read this thread. It is very interesting reading all your comments that's is why now I am curious how does it taste like!

they never told us their mince was the dodgy stuff with horse in it to start with, but I've had people tell me it's not the same after the scandal of mixing old nags in the mince

I'm right there with you on this one. Sometimes I just don't want to know and might take a bite of something happy not to know what it is. For now I am happy to go horse back riding and even that leaves me a little scared.

I am curious about the color of the meat and the taste of it. I had never seen nor eaten any horse meat yet I hope it is not something that is tough to chew on. Is it not too costly to raise and butcher horses?
