How is the corona virus affecting you?

Salons, nail shops and gyms are part of phase one. I can't think of a worse business to re-open than a gym. Sweaty people sharing weight and exercise machines?

That is really a strange choice for phase one. And interestingly, none can be called in any way essential. I think here, if and when we start to ease off, such places will be the last on the list.

The UK government agreed to pay their wages during this time.

Yes - its really rather good in the circumstances. With some exceptions, all business big and small can apply for this. Employees receive 80% of their average wage for the duration of the lockdown. My son, who works part-time for a famous shoe shop receives 80% of what he would have earned which means he hasn't had to ask me to bail him out and can pay his rent. Yesterday, the government also announced a guaranteed tax free, interest free loan for businesses of up to £50,000 to help them keep afloat.

In Michigan, we pay 10 cents per can or bottle for most beverages, and we get that 10 cents back when we return them to the supermarket. This law ensures that there are virtually no cans or bottles on the side of the road: someone else will take that can if you don't want it and get the 10 cents back, so this sort of littering simply doesn't happen (much, at least).
I wish we had the same system in the UK - not only to increase recycling rates, but like you say it would also mean there's far less litter around. They have it in Germany and it works really well there - most of the returns are done via an automated machines at the entrance to supermarkets: you put your bottles or can in the machine, it reads the barcode and then when you're done it prints you a voucher you can use at the till. Though thinking about it, we often don't get our deposits back because you only get the pfand back on bottles or cans bought in Germany and our style of travelling means we're often drinking the wine/beer we bought a couple of days ago in France/Austria/Poland/etc. whilst we're in Germany. And then drinking the German wine/beer when we've moved on elsewhere......I think we need to be a bit more more organised LOL

Texas goes off stay-at-home orders on Friday. Salons, nail shops and gyms are part of phase one. I can't think of a worse business to re-open than a gym.
They do seem to be a strange selection of places to be opening......you can't keep your distance whilst you're getting your hair cut or nails done! Much as I'm missing the beauty salon and I really need my hair cut and my highlights re-done.......I'm not so desperate that I'm going to risk my and others' health/life for it!

I've worn my hair every which way over the years, so the actual haircut, I'm not missing. I do terribly miss chatting with my stylist, she's so funny, and she's a trained baker and cook, and getting my head, face, and neck rubdown, is also missed. :(

But, you still cook for him, yes?

Not really any more - since he moved out he cooks for himself mostly. He's really quite good and sometimes asks me for recipes. For his birthday last year I bought him a huge selection of spices from the local Asian shop plus a spice grinder. He loves curry...

I almost forgot to mention: I had a "virtual family reunion" this past weekend, with people from California, Massachusetts, Ohio, Illinois, and Florida. We had over 20 people, in 17 windows, and it was really a cool thing.

We did the reunion on Zoom, which is a conferencing app that many businesses are using these days for meetings. I didn't even know it existed until a month ago. Ford has used WebEx for many years, and we virtually never use the video part of the tool.

I'm happy one of my aunts thought of it, but the situation in the world today is the only reason this happened. The idea for meeting people remotely clicked with her as a way to get the extended family together. Prior to the world shutting down, I think any reunion plans would have involved a physical meeting near where most of the family is (in Massachusetts). So, in a weird way, some good came out of all this.

The (roughly) weekly trip to the Co-op today. We went a bit earlier than usual. Only one person can go in at a time, but it helps to have two carrying the stuff home. The downside was that there was a bit of a queue, but on the plus side, we got eggs. We even managed to get some spaghetti.

Too many dog walkers around. Some of these people seem to go out about four or five times a day. At one point, we crossed the street as we didn't like the look of the ugly, slavering brute that was coming our way.

The dog wasn't very appealing, either.

Level 3 which is basically 4 but takeaways. Opened takeaways as of midnight a day ago. People lined up and parked cars in drive through, to go back in morning and line up. Bad luck. KFC towed their cars. People pffft. We ordered a curry takeaway , 1 hour delivery, it was good.

Going to the Co-op yesterday, I was getting the uncomfortable sense of having forgotten how to walk. It was the first time I'd been outside for eight days and it just felt odd.
...and that wasn't a weird dream..much scarier than flying saw blades!

Well, today I've had my first locally-filled meds home-delivered. Between my wife, myself, and my dog, I was used to nipping into the pharmacy a couple of times a week, every week, and now I've been twice since March 12th.

Really, groceries and meds were the main reason I ever went into town, and I got to know quite a few of the employees and pharmacy techs on a first-name basis, and now I rarely get to see them. I rather miss that. :(
