How is the corona virus affecting you?

Wednesday (June 10), Texas had a new record high for Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations. People stopping the wearing of masks is considered a possible cause. Well, duh.

It really pi$$e$ me off that I wear a mask to protect others, and they don't seem to care what happens to me -- or anyone else.

I saw that on CNN yesterday, I thought of you when i saw it. They reported from Dallas.is there any truth the 75 year old guy that got pushed over had 30 arrests for protesting? It's how it's reported here.

On the subject of masks...went for Chinese takeaway tonight, first time back at our favorite place since this all started.

First, big sign on the door, "PLEASE WEAR MASK!" Second, inside, they've got the whole (small) dining room boarded up, completely closed off, floor-to-ceiling, and at the counter, completely boarded up, except for a little sliding door that the counter person uses to pass food out, take your credit card, etc. Another big sign, "PLEASE WEAR MASK!" I wore a mask.

I came in, she slid open the little door, took my name, bing-bang-bong, she handed me my food, and when I bent down get it, I got a clear shot back to the kitchen...no one in a mask.

It boggles the mind. I'm now 4/4 going into local restaurants, looking into the kitchen, and not seeing anyone in a mask.

I don't know. It is not hard to get arrested for protesting, so I'm sure it is possible, especially over a lot of years. I don't see how that excuses pushing an old man to the ground, then walking past him as he bleeds on the sidewalk. It is common sense that you don't handle an elderly protester as you might handle a young protester.

As for the Covid-19 spike, I'm seeing a dramatic increase in cases in my own town of Frisco. It was down to pretty much zero, and now there are new cases reported every day, and it is back up to 7 new cases some days. There were six new cases reported today.

The only takeout I have done has been with drive through windows, but believe me, I wondered if the people I can't see are wearing masks.

I have also pondered the use of gloves by cashiers. If someone hands a tainted credit card (or cash) to a cashier, with or without gloves, what's the difference -- unless the cashier changes gloves after each transaction?

I wasn't knocking the old guy, I'd never lay a hand on an old person, protester or not. See he had 300 arrests now. First live game of sport in the world tonight here. The highlanders vs Chiefs. North vs south. I'm watching it live.

I know this is off topic, but let's air it out. According to politifact.com, Martin Gugino, the 75-year-old man pushed to the ground by Buffalo police officers, has a grand total of four arrests and zero convictions.

The 300 arrests rumor was started -- be prepared for a shocker -- on social media outlets Facebook and Twitter.

If he had ANY other arrests, Politifact.com could not find any evidence to support it.

I don't want to go hyperbolic, but from over here is does look like your second civil war has already started, and in November you are going to see either a cancelled election, or massive fraud and disenfranchisement with the incumbent President refusing to leave office. Either way, the white supremacists have decided they want "their" country back and it is going to get messy.

I don't think I'd go as far as a second civil war. White supremacist groups are on the rise. There is a movement on the part of a significant minority to "take back THEIR country." Disenfranchisement is also a real problem, as some states set policies that make it harder for some people to vote than others. The 2020 general election is probably going to get very ugly.

By the way, the racial divide is not universal. Both of my next door neighbors are black families. Nobody around us seems to mind at all. But, Frisco (my city) is also well above average for education. 63-percent have a Bachelors degree or higher, and of that group, 28-percent have a Master's degree.

The majority in Frisco probably held their noses and voted for Trump in 2016, and the rest of us held our noses and voted for Hillary. People here, for the most part, were not enthusiastic about either 2016 presidential candidate.

With regard the Clinton/ Trump choice, many of us around the World hoped that Obama had shown that younger, energetic, charismatic Presidential candidates were the future, but nope, both parties plumped for aged representatives with loads of baggage - and the Democrats still haven't got it this time round.

Yes this is off topic, but the response to Covid-19 around the World is increasingly been driven by political dogma and less by medical prudence, so we are all being directly affected by the self interests of the few in power more than in normal times.

It can hardly be a coincidence that the worst records and responses to the whole situation have occurred in countries with right-wing "populist" governments.

And yes, all I'm doing is stating the flamin' obvious.

The Covid-19 situation and some other big issues really do have a lot to do with "populist" sentiments, I think. Populist politicians play only to their bases. I would suggest Brexit happened because of populism gone wild. Likewise, there is pressure from populism to reopen everything and get "back to normal."

With the Covid-19 pandemic, my mantra is "follow the scientific evidence," while the populist sentiment seems to be, "ignore it, and it will go away." Populism, to me, seems like a bad parent giving a spoiled child whatever they want so the kid will be happy.

I agree 100%. What I find bewildering is that somehow people buy into this concept put out by rich, privileged politicians (and in some cases, complete non-politicians) that they are on the side of the "little people" and anti-establishment. They couldn't be more part of the establishment. It's what my partner terms 'Richard Branson syndrome' - all big cheesy grins and this kind of Hey-look-at-me-I'm-just-a-normal-guy shtick.

Not sure if this has been said before in this thread, but i thought I'd report hearing a doctor on the news saying that take out doesn't worry her, because the virus can't live in the stomach. So someone cooking without a mask should still be okay. Now, of course you don't want to carry the virus from the packaging or your credit card to your nose or mouth so proper procedures should still be in place.
I always when I either swipe my card myself, or hand it to someone else, I wipe it down right after with a lysol wipe. I keep a large container of them in my car. Then I clean my hands with it. And of course, I wear a mask.

I would still stay away from take-out cold items like salads, personally. It has to go into your mouth before it gets to your stomach, and if you are breathing while you are eating (ever had food go down the wrong pipe?) you are risking that some of the virus could get into the mucous membranes of your respiratory system, IMO. OTOH, I read that temps over 160F/70C are warm enough to kill the virus, so I would reheat food that has had a chance to cool down.

There is a pub near where we live that has quite obviously been opening on the sly. Now, like all pubs, they get no deliveries, so there is no "fresh" beer available. I've seen the chap who works in the bar going in there with cases of stuff obviously bought from the local Co-op, so one imagines they are not intending to sell these at a loss.

So what we have, effectively, is people who are prepared to risk their health and, potentially, their lives, to drink rubbish lager at a higher price than which they could buy it themselves to drink at home.

It numbs the mind.
