My Escali kitchen scale just took a deep dive. I am getting ready to do the next step on my pizza dough and it wouldn't turn on. It was working fine last night. It's solar or can be charged using a USB and I plugged it into my computer to charge, but it's blank. It's supposed to show that it's charging when it is plugged in but nothing.

Are ‘Escali’ a good brand of kitchen scale?

I have two sets of kitchen scales. Good ones that cost a bit that I love (big plate and waterproof) and the cheapest that Argos had to offer (I think they were about £7) because the last time my kitchen scales gave up the ghost I was right in the thick of it, people were coming round and the shops were shut!! Now I keep back up scales.

Yeah these came from a company called Sharper Image (they carry a lot of 3rd party goods) and I have always found their products to be of high quality. I think Escali must be a good brand as they are carried on Amazon, Kitchen Supply, and other sites as well, though I had never heard of them before. The damned scales cost $60 and supposedly have a lifetime warranty, so I emailed Escali. We will see if they replace them. Sharper Image only takes returns within 60 days (this probably will be the last time I order anything through them). I am going to buy a cheapo backup set at Walmart that costs about $10 tomorrow.

There goes my pizza plans for tonight. I had to guess at measurements for my dough but it put me back on time so no way will it be ready tonight. Pizza tomorrow night instead. Thankfully I have a backup plan for dinner.

$60 is expensive for digital scales so would hope that translated into some longevity wouldn't you.
Hopefully they’ll be cooperative on the return.
The customer service/returns policy really makes a difference doesn’t it. I often happily pay a few pence more to order electrical items from John Lewis just because they don’t mess you about on the returns.

Shame about the pizza plans! Hopefully it’ll taste even better tomorrow?!

One can only hope. I just was looking online and Food and Wine rated Escali as #1. I am beyond irritated at this point, I am in charge of rolls for Thanksgiving and was going to make some brownies from scratch too and I need a flipping scale! Ready to buy a cheapo from Walmart.

I've had my Escali for well over 10 years and all it's ever done is go through batteries. The battery compartment lid finally broke off but the batteries stay in irregardless. Overall pleased with the device and the brand.
That's good to hear. Everyone gets a lemon at some point in time and apparently this time that was me.

I’ve had my Cuisinart scale for at least 15 years, and I use it daily. I never thought I’d want one, but now it’s essential, and I didn’t pay for it, it was a gift. It’s about $50 these days.

I got 2 scales, no actually 3.
1 for very small amounts. I don't use it often, mainly when making sausages to measure sodium nitrite
The other 2 are for general use. Both on batteries, one tskes aaa batteries, the other those flat round things.
I use them often

You’ve reminded me I also have one for very small amounts, very useful for those micro amounts that larger graded scales don’t seem to easily register.
They’re sold as ‘postal scales’ but I believe they’re more likely sold to measure out herbs of a certain chemical composition to people who will be doing more sitting on the sofa than cooking 😂

I found a cheapo digital scale at Walmart for about $12. Sitting the pickup lane waiting for it now. It's raining. We've been home for over 2 weeks and little to no sun since we've been home. Great baking weather.
