A bit of research suggests that runner beans are grown as a vegetable in America and indeed, the plant originated in America and was originally introduced to the UK as an ornamental flower. In America, I think, it has more popularity as an ornamental flower than here, but the beans are eaten too. In some areas of America the climate is too hot and dry for it to grow. In America its known as the Scarlet Runner Bean. See here:
