This is the thread where kind denizens of CB convinced me to save money and countertop space:
Talk me out of buying a KitchenAid

I read that thread as half either way - but its about KitchenAids in general, including their food processors and meat grinding attachments, not just the stand mixers or the pasta attachments. I'd say the comments from those of us who have the stand mixer (and various attachments) are slightly more positive than negative. But I guess from reading it that you don't already have a KitchenAid? If so then a standalone pasta machine is probably your only option anyway.

Gave the pasta maker a whirl last night and made these ravioli. I cranked it while my daughter fed the pasta through - a bit awkward but we did end up with some nice long, thin sheets of pasta:
