Onion Gravy Hack

Learned it from a friend in Florida who was a fishing boat captain. He and his wife ran out of breading and used the potato flakes but it was shallow pan frying, not deep frying. I don't believe they used any egg wash. I'm sure someone else out there has done this before as well.
I’m not au fait with instant mash. I’ve tried Idahoan mash (and didn’t mind it) but other than that I don’t know if we get flakes here 🤷‍♀️

I'm not a fan of instant potatoes. My mom made them when I was a kid and I hated them. I'm sure they've come a long way since then. As a fish breading it's not going to make much difference I'd think.

Sainsburys has them (they even have their own branded potato flakes).

Nigella uses it to make gnocchi. I don't mind it. It's rather like I feel about tinned potatoes. They are just different. Very useful fir thickening soups or stews. I've also been known to eat them with a squirt of salad cream and harissa on top.

New thread needed...

I make instant mashed (and gravy sometimes) when I feel lousy and want something quick and easy on my tummy.

Where does she get these flakes? I haven’t only seen powder.

They are common here though perhaps thought of as rather old fashioned.
We have them here as well:

“Canned” say I’ve ever used them, though.
