Places to visit in North America

I spent some time in Virginia in the 90s, and have spent a whole lot more time in Ohio/Kentucky in the past 6 years.
Virginia in the summer is absolutely beautiful (I was in Great Falls). Take a trip to Charlottesville - magnificent, and take a while to go around the University.
As for Ohio and Kentucky, some lovely little villages (you'd call them towns) like Mason, or Covington for example. In Kentucky, you have to get on the Bourbon Trail and visit a distillery or two. Wonderful history, lovely people. My opinion, of course!
I vaguely remember towns like Madison, Wisconsin, and Ann Arbor, Michigan from my 1974 choir tour - beautiful and quaint.
Goes without saying that I love NY and Chicago.
Never been further west than Minneapolis!

I'd say the Redwood Forest in California (while it still exists) is a must see.

You have missed the most scenic part of the country.
I would have to disagree. I'm partial to upstate New York and much of the countryside of Massachusetts and other New England states. There are some lovely areas out west (Montana, Washington, and northern California in particular) but I find the northeast US to be quite beautiful.

Having traveled extensively by car in the United States, only missed 5 States.
I love the West, the East is beautiful, having been born and lived in Hawaii most of my life-I am very partial to it, but I also appreciate the Continental US for it's vast diversity.
We stay away from large cities because of the elevated crime.
San Francisco is WAY dangerous, as is Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, NYC ... places I would not ever go back to, so I'm glad that I've been in the past to these big, major cities.

I absolutely loved Chicago (stayed down near Lake Michigan) both times I visited, but that was quite awhile ago...took my mom to Manhattan in 2014 and that was nice, but never been to the other boroughs. Never been to Detroit and never wanted to, I hear it's really bad now. I always wanted to go to Philly but you just talked me out of it! San Francisco I went to while visiting my oldest sister who lived in Palo Alto (she recently moved to Seattle to be closer to her daughter and grandkids), and that was over 20 years ago. It's too bad that places like that get ruined.

Portland and Seattle are also cities I would avoid.
When we travel by car, which has been about 5 years now, we stay outside of the cities and we MIGHT venture in by taxi to a specific attraction that we want to see.
Like when we went to Louisville back in 2018, we stayed across the State line in Indiana, we also saved a boatload of money on our hotel.
We wanted to go to the Louisville Slugger Museum and the Brown Hotel ... not a nice area.
We also went to Churchill Downs, very cool!

Possibly. Just never got the opportunity.
I'd really like to see the Grand Canyon and San Francisco, for starters.
Good choices. California has some worthwhile national parks like Yosemite and Death Valley, the first in the mountains and the second in the desert.

There is something in the country for every preference. I may be partial to the West because I was raised in Oregon.
