RIP Queen Elizabeth II

Consensus at work is that it should have been possible to set up a registration centre in say Hyde Park where you turned up and were given a wristband with a time on it to turn up at Westminster. No need to queue for hours.
But as you said, that´s the whole point - queueing. It´s a really odd , almost obsessive compulsion to wait your turn, be polite, be stubborn, be patient, show stoicism, etc., etc.
I once queued for 13 hours in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Venezuela to vote in Presidential "elections". 4.30 am until 5.30 pm . The military and the Electoral authorities deliberately delayed the opening of voting stations in areas considered "opposition". Queuing is not a pleasant thing for that length of time, so for those who are prepared to queue for 20-30 hours, good luck to them!

Thais are good at queueing...........

Venezuelans too.Seems to be a tropical thing...Queue for everything
I hear from friends in Venezuela that filling up your tank can take anything up to THREE days. Helps the economy, of course - within an hour, there´s some entrepreneur selling coffee, empanadas, arepas, cupcakes , coca-cola and cold beer!

Reading the article in the link is quite an eye-opener. I don't suppose you're planning to go back any time soon...

I just love that. Practical solution.

My experience in Asia (albeit only a few years) indicates that the picture could also represent Malaysians and possibly also Indonesians. However, not Chinese. Chinese do not generally queue. They hussle, sometimes violently, to be at what normally would be the head of the queue.

I used to work with a Chinese-American, raised in China, and he was brutal in a train station/Underground. He would physically shove people out of his way.

You don't need to tell me about the Chinese, last time we went to Fiji we went via Hong Kong. The boarding, exiting the plane and Fiji immigration were awful, just one large ruck with people being pushed out the way and elbowed. Fiji border staff are world famous for their cheerful and welcoming disposition. They were not happy to see the Chinese arrive.

TastyReuben expect serious security and closures of large parts of central London on Sunday and Monday. Our FD who lives near Tate Modern has just left his car here in Leicester and taken the train home for the weekend because 10 foot steel barriers are blocking roads to his flat. Not surprising when we are having the largest collection of heads of state seen for 70 years.

Sorry

We are receiving a lot of emails from suppliers with regards to being closed next Monday, only 1 so far is staying open but with a skeleton crew.

Thanks for the heads up. We’re prepared to not be surprised by anything. We’ve already contacted the hotel to make sure they’ll do more than just throw us a pillow out the door, and they did tell us, in all seriousness, that they’ll make sure we’re fed, but that the hotel restaurant is closed to all but guests on Monday, and it may just be a tray of sandwiches.

We just got notified by Eurostar just now that if you’re coming in on Sunday or Monday…”please be patient,” so that’s what we’ll be. I can endure just about anything as long as I get a little notice.

Hey, once in our lifetimes kind of thing. Call us crazy, but we still feel quite lucky to get to witness it. Even if we can’t go through the line, even if all we get are day-old afternoon tea sandwiches and a dry scone, we’ll manage. We’ll have gotten to say, “Well done, Ms. Windsor, thank you!” from just down the road.

Check back with me Monday evening on that, though. I may feel differently!

I was reading about the security arrangements for the next 5 days. Unbelievable and seriously awe-inspiring, but an absolute nightmare for the security services.
Firstly, Westminster Abbey is not a "controlled" secure area; it´s open. Secondly, there will be more world dignitaries present than at any other event in history. Kings, queens, emperors, sheiks, presidents and politicians from all across the world.
The Met police have called in reinforcements from all over the UK, including Scotland and Northern Ireland. The armed forces have already been deployed. MI5 and GCHQ ( FBI and CIA, I suppose) are intimately involved assessing risks and possible terrorist threats. The SAS are on full alert. Police marksmen have been deployed all across London, and the area of Westminster is constantly being checked for threats by sniffer dogs. Even manholes are being checked and double-checked - and the funeral is still 4 days away.
A dinner will be held by the King on Sunday at Buckingham Palace, and there´s another nightmare. I´d be interested to see what the menu is, however!
