This leads me to ask: what is your minimum wage over there? Or average cost of living?
Here it is about $7.50 an hour. Taxes vary with kids and marriage etc. Medical insurance also varies wildly.

25 or over: £7.20
21 to 24: £6.95
18 to 20: £5.55
Under 18: £4.00

Unless, of course, you have the misfortune to work for the likes of Sports Direct or some other bunch of unscrupulous sleazebags.

Brussels Sprouts are 2.79 a pound

Brussels are about £1.50 a kilo in the UK. That would be approx. $.86 per pound. Much, much cheaper than yours. Where are your sprouts grown?

I have no clue since grocery stores are not required to put out that much information.
