I thought I'd better give you a heads up that the OS that our server runs on is being terminated and that we need to move to a more up to date version. At present we're on a fully managed server that I pay for monthly. It would no longer be managed after 30th June 2024 but the cost would remain the same and I'd have no support if things went wrong.

I've got 2 options, though to be honest I think the reality is that there is only 1 option.
  • We can stay with the Web hosting company we're with at present who are not forum platform specialists but I've been happy with to date (except for 1 glitch) and I can try to migrate us to a new server on a platform I don't know...
  • We can migrate to a new host who are the forum software specialists who now do site hosting as well and for a one off fee will migrate the site for us. They'll also deal with the day to day running of the server. The content remains ours etc.
The second option seems the most logical and will cost slightly less in the long run because the hosting comes with the forum software licenses that i pay annually every December. The down side is that I have to pay them to migrate the site for us and we will be going back to a physical server rather than the virtual cloud server we currently are on. Most members won't see a difference in speed, though myself and rascal in NZ may.

Time frame: well because of me going back to university full time at the beginning of July, I'd ideally like to see the site moved to its new physical home before the end of June.

All you will know about it will be that the site will likely be down for a few hours during the server move, but I'll give you an update on that when I have more information and a date planned.
