Summer solstice is typically the 22nd in the southern hemisphere and weirdly where I am, the days actually don't start getting shorter yet, not for another week. It's something to do with the angle the earth spins at and how far from the equator you are....in the southern hemisphere, shorter.
And just to add to the fun, the sun will continue setting later each day until 14th January (which is the first day it will set 1 minute earlier)... but the sunrise will be 16 minutes later by that day, hence why the days themselves are shortening but the sun is still setting later until that day... I understand why enough to know it in my head, just not enough to explain it in words only to others... not without diagrams at least! This covers it better than I can in a few short paragraphs.
