Tecojote fruit

I found a recipe about a Mexican juice drink that uses sugar cane, cinnamon some other ingredients. I think just by watching the video on how to make it made me salivate a bit but was disappointed to find out that the tecojote fruit they use is not readily available. The fruit looks like an apple, I want to know if I can use apple instead of tecojote.

One website I looked at suggests substituting kumquats, apricots or plums. Another one describes the taste as like apple but with bitter undertones. Yet another says it tastes a bit like quince. I reckon you should either use apples with a squirt or two of lime juice or plums with lime juice. Or maybe both!
