For a normal healthy person, drinking a daily dose of black pepper and turmeric tea has scientifically confirmed health benefits. The internet is also saturated with charlatans promoting miracle cures. Unfortunately, charlatans are the dominant force because people are too lazy to research and separate the facts from fiction. From personal experience, a few years ago, I tried a daily dose of black pepper and turmeric tea, it aggravated my stomach ulcer and I stopped immediately.
 
I eat a fair amount of turmeric and its brother & sister ginger and galangal
But because I like them, health benefit is a bonus
I eat lots of ginger too! I make ginger caramels to keep on hand for the occasional stomach flare up opposed to pepto-bismol...

I haven't seen galangal since leaving Las Vegas. The Asian stores would carry it matter of course.
 
I have ground turmeric on my countertop and sprinkle a little on just about everything. Haven't noticed any staining.
Now I'm looking fpr a tea recipe that cuts phlegm.
 
Also--I have heard the turmeric's effect is enhanced by a little chili or pepper,
Does anyone know anything about this?

Ginger candies, gummies, chewies, whatever might be a better call for an upset stomach. Turmeric helps with my joints and I've never noticed it to do anything either way for stomach issues. I used to keep a small bottle of "ginger shots" I called it in the frig and when there was an issue manifesting I'd take a splash.

A popular (old) recipe there uses just white pepper (piper nigrum), coriander root and garlic as the only spice and it's hot and delicious!
