Not all Europeans eat at that time, it depends on the region. Generally the Southern countries eat later in the day than the Northern countries. The Netherlands has a general dinner time of about 18.00 at night, some eat earlier but that's considered old fashioned, and some around 19.00, but after 20.00 is unusual here.
The scandinavians tend to eat around the same time.

In the southern parts of Europe dinner time generally starts at 20.00 and runs until 22.00 because it's hotter during the day and many people take a nap in the afternoon. A lot of them also work in the morning and evening to avoid the midday heat.

My own household is an exception, due to my medical condition our main hot meal of the day is at about 12.00 so I don't have to get up several times during the night. I eat my last meal of the day at around 18.00 which replaces what others eat for lunch.

I eat my main meal at lunch time most days now.
During the pandemic because everyone was at home I made the main meal at lunch time an event. It helped fill the time and everyone enjoyed it.
But I also discovered if I eat the heavier main meal at lunch time I no longer had stomach ache disturbing my sleep.
Bonus. So I stuck with that and now where possible the main meal is always at lunch time.

I also like that the kitchen is left tidy early on in the day and it free’s up the rest of evening.

Before 1pm you’re even likely to get turned away.
The evening rush doesn’t start until late with most places not filling up completely until 9pm.
Yep, I can confirm that.Last time I was in Barcelona, we'd have breakfast in the hotel but then, around 2pm, slip into a bar for some tapas and a glass of wine.
The only formal evening meal we had: we arrived at 9pm, and the place was empty. By the time we left ( about 2 hours later) it was just beginning to fill up.
Here in Caracas, when there was actually night life available, we'd go for dinner at 10 -11pm. I remember a very popular Italian restaurant we used to go to where we arrived at 11pm and had to wait 60 minutes at the bar to get seated.

Brilliant.

I grew up in a very small town. Everyday a siren would go off and that is when everybody ate lunch. Now many years later, I eat lunch when I’m hungry. Dinner is normally 6:30 for us.
