I use it all the time, being down under I don't get to converse in real time as I'm posting while others are asleep. Except @SatNavSaysStraightOn and @Yorky who are closest to my time line. So some posts appear quite later for me so I use the tt button and new posts all the time.

New posts won't disappear at all. That will always be there as will New Threads (which is the one I use the most).
it is just the Trending.... that I'm considering the fate of.
 
I never even noticed the link to "trending topics".

I wouldn't have known what "trending topics" meant anyway.
