Sort of okonomiyaki. There’s red cabbage, broccoli stalk, carrot, zucchini & spring onion in there. And diced smoked bacon top & bottom. Really delicious actually.

My favorite for British fish and chips is haddock. I also love my Southern US catfish and chips. Catfish is also a white, flaky fish, but fried Southern style, one would use a cornmeal breading instead of a batter.

Hot diggity-dang, I can feel the crunch of that breading just by looking at it.

Very unusual to be dining out on a Monday, but my wife surprised me by wanting to pick a place that I would like. Usually, we figure out what everyone wants, and Asian food rarely comes up.

This place is in a strip mall, and easy to miss. There were quite a few people here for a Monday...the picture was taken to respect the privacy of the other diners.

A cup of miso soup is provided to every diner.

Two drinks enter. One drink Leaves. Sorry about the obscure Mad Max reference. Actually, we polished off both the Sapporo lager and the tasty pear-flavored sake.

We shared, but by wife ordered a chicken bibimbap. This is a large enough bowl to feed a small family, as long as the family isn't too hungry and there aren't too many people in the family. Seriously, though, it's massive, and as tasty as it was we had plenty to take home.

I ordered assorted sushi, including a fried sushi roll called the Crazy Boy...I had to get it with a name like that! The fried surface of the rice was similar to the awesome fried rice at the bottom of the sushi bowl. The flying fish roe (on the left) was true to it's name, since the roe kept flying out of the sushi wrapper. I'm curious to see if anyone can make an actual roe sushi that doesn't do this, but it was tasty.

If I had more of an appetite, I could have gotten this, a literal sushi boat. This is a recreation of a medieval sea battle off the coast of Japan, reenacted with sushi instead of people. I think we can all agree that, if war is necessary, let it be fought with sushi,

I decided to make broccoli gouda soup, and I had way too much broccoli. Normally, I cut up a head of broccoli, stems and all, and throw it in the pot. But, this time, I decided to just use the florettes. This left me with a lot of stems. I steamed some of them at first, then I had another idea: pickle them!

First, I sliced them thinly with a mandolin.

NOTE: talk to text on my phone thought I said “ I sliced Matt Finley with Amanda Lynn”. Sorry, Matt! I hope Siri didn't call the police on me.

Then, a simple pickling mixture consisting of apple cider vinegar, salt, kashmiri pepper powder, and berber. Note that I still have flyinglentris's excellent recipe (linked in the last sentence), which made for a flavorful picking liquid.

So, there you have it. Pickled broccoli stems. And, Matt...I hope there's no hard feelings.
