Hint: it comes from the Sea
mussels?Hint: it comes from the Sea
Seem rather large for periwinkles. At least the ones I used to catch in Scotland for ecology ...Are they periwinkles?
Sorry, nomussels?
(Apologies, I had my identification of abalone and mussels confused when I first guessed abalone. I actually meant mussels (sorry) )
BINGO!I thought possibly mussels but the colour and structure looks wrong. I also thought soft shelled crab but again the structure is wrong. Limpet? I know those are popular in Hawaii but it doeasn't really look like that either. Wrong colour and structure for an oyster too. 🤷♀️
I had to look up periwinkles JAS_OH1Are they periwinkles?
Yeah, I initially thought limpet, but it didn't look right compared to the ones I have seen.Sorry, no
BINGO!
You got Morning Glory
These are from Hawaii and a very expensive delicacy at that.
In Hawaiian the name is Opihi (oh-pee-he)
I found this on Wikipedia

They can cost as much as $400USD per gallon!
So this tiny 1/4 cup serving could fetch as much as $25USD
They are eaten raw, normally with the full monty of Hawaiian dishes

When we go back to Oahu, we make at least one pilgrimage to this restaurant and spend a small fortune!
The one thing that I REALLY miss about home is the food!

They're very different looking, aren't they?Yeah, I initially thought limpet, but it didn't look right compared to the ones I have seen.
The taste like the Ocean really is how I discribe them.Ohhh gotcha! How do they taste? Any iodine taste to them, or the usual shellfish (mussels/oysters) flavor?
Opihi are endemic to the Hawaiian Islands.Never seen or heard of this before
Gimme a serving of Opihi and a bowl of 3 day old Poi with Hawaiian Sea salt over the top and I'm one happy little Homesick Island Gal.
Never Mind the Burdocks, here come the Limpets...... actually I'm wrong. They can be foraged here in the UK: Limpets | Never Mind the Burdocks
