Anyone ever listen to Doc Watson?
Doc also was the first guy I ever heard equally adept at flatpicking and fingerstyle, which made it ok to want to do both. Before him, you were either a bluegrass flatpicker or a folkie fingerpicker, and sworn enemies, with a couple of exceptions.

Oh yes. The late Merle too. Clarence White was another favorite. I saw Tony Rice at a little dive in Salt Lake City (literally called The Hole In The Wall) back in maybe 1981 or so, memorable show. These days, Billy Strings has been a delight to watch develop.

Haggard was another favorite of mine. When you mentioned "The hole in the Wall", made me think of "30 days in the hole" by Humble Pie.
