What produce/ingredients did you buy or obtain today (2024)?

I love this. I've never even considered what a saffron flower looks like.
I'll be honest the price of the stuff means I don't use it.
Usually if an orangey colours required I'm naughty and just chuck a but if turmeric in 😬😂

It just looks like a purple crocus because that's what it is.

I'm able to buy 10g for AU$44 online. I've tested their stuff against supermarket saffron (awful stuff) and it's much better quality than the supermarket stuff and at least equal in quality, if not better than the dedicated spice specialist that sells B grade saffron as they call it for obscene amounts of money.

AU$44 is roughly £22. We use a reasonable amount of saffron. The online supplier I use sources it from Iran and I can buy in larger amounts if I want to.

I've never done anything much with my garden. It was a jumbled mess (not even any grass) when we moved in.
There's some sort of early attempt by Mr SSOAPS grandmother at borders and quite a few well established trees but not much more.

I rotovated it and grassed it over, thinking it's the sort of thing I'll get to when I'm older and not so busy.

Do you think they'd survive/thrive in shaded areas in-between the trees?

Just lifted 2-3kg of fresh figs from the trees. I've another ½kg of raspberries to harvest and the lemon tree has dropped so many overripe lemons that I need to clear some away so that the chooks can hide under the lemon tree again.

Ok, there might be more than 3kg there!

Edited: weighed them all to make jam with and I've got 5kg of fresh figs. There's loads more on the 2 trees as well!
They look gorgeous.

Sadly that's definitely a no.

They are typically grown in big wide open fields in Iran, in full sun.

Mine are growing in similar well drained soil, in the full sun. I have difficultly in the summer wedding the central bed they grow at the end of because it gets too much sun (UV is desperately high in Australia all year round). Early mornings are about the only time I can weed that bed in summer. In winter, it's a bit easier, but not much negate the uv is still so high. I have to wear my hiking clothing just to weed the garden, hubby does the same now. It's all +50SPF ... it's the only way. That's what they like.

Ah well that's a definite no then, the soil is a heavy clay so it's not ideal to start with.

I'll buy it online instead.
I wonder what the price is in Spain?
Truffles are much cheaper here cos they're a major exporter I wonder given it's a popular ingredient if that's a bit cheaper too?

Supposedly (and I'm no expert) there are THREE main producers of saffron in the world: Spain, Iran and Kashmir. I'm talking real, authentic saffron, not safflower, which is often bartered in Turkey as saffron. You could try the Kashmiri saffron; it may just be a bit cheaper.
At one stage, when I had the chutney business, I actually looked into importing Kashmiri saffron to Venezuela. Never happened, unfortunately.

Kashmiri saffron is meant to be the best saffron. It is much more expensive over here. I've bought some. It does have a different colour, much deeper red. When is daylight, I'll photo the 2 alongside each other.

I'll have a look at the prices and origins in the supermarket tomoz.
I'm not sure as I'm clearly not a connoisseur that I should be starting with the best stuff, I should probably go in with entry level saffron until I get my stabilisers off 😂

Just aim to get the 2nd cheapest, so no yellow stamen involved. With home grown that's not an issue, I'm not selling it. But the cheap stuff involves more area of the stamen that don't have the actual flavour and colour.

This is worth a read before you buy.
What are the different grades of saffron?
