What produce/ingredients did you buy or obtain today (2025)?

One day I wish I could taste the real sushi in Japan

Do it! You only live once and it's amazing. :)

Oh yes me too, very much!

You should go!

My sis is in Osaka right now with her family and today's the last day of their trip. I asked her if she'd eaten any good sushi because her husband doesn't like fish and she said 'no'. I said 'you're mad - go out yourself and get some!'.

Mr SSOAP really wants to go to but the thing that bothers me is going to Japan, seeing all the beautiful food I’d like to eat and not being able to because of the bl**dy gluten free thing. Theres a heavy use of sauces and pastes (miso etc) that contain wheat and a low awareness of coeliac disease.

It’s not regarded as wise choice of destination for coeliacs. Modifications aren’t welcome and communication is serious barrier so ultimately as a coeliac I wouldn’t enjoy getting into the sweet shop and not be able to have any sweets!
It is on my fantasy ‘They cured coeliac disease’ list though 😂

Ah. That is a bummer and I can see how that would make traveling anywhere slightly troublesome. :(

It does a bit. Most of the time in the majority of places you can work around it and it doesn’t matter that you can’t have this or that but Japan and all that lovely food it would be a killer 😂
When I was in Nepal and Tibet I mostly ate plain rice for a month because they don’t understand Coeliac disease.
Well it wasn’t totally plain because I carried my own little tubes of soy sauce, paprika, Tobasco and sesame oil but you get the idea.

I just back from the town store where I found that they keep the cube steaks in three different places 🤔
So I got some cube steaks thanks to Barriehie for some chicken fried steak tonight.
Along with some frozen corn and frozen peas, Italian bread, shallots, cherry toms on the vine, and 80/20 hamburger.

Also picked up a bottle each of red and regular moscato on my way home. And a small bottle of Dusse Cognac for next time I make a pepper sauce.

Mrs. GH and I took a road trip today out to a Mennonite discount grocery store. A lot of their stuff is bulk produce, scratch 'n dent and/or cans that are near their "best buy" dates, dented boxes, that sort of thing. We really need to go there more often, as we always score bigly. I bought a ton of canned tomatoes and similar for 39 to 99 cents a can. In fact, we filled two grocery carts that were almost overflowing for a total cost of under $240. That is nuts! Some examples;

Fall pumpkins were all $2.49 to $3.49.

This gigantic neck pumpkin was 5 bucks. Mrs. GH plans to make a pumpkin pie with it and use the rest for the dogs.

A 50# bag of potatoes was $15.96. I'll cube and pressure can some, but the rest will keep well in my cool basement.

Pressure canning! That's a good thing. I got mine this year and it's great. 👍
