What produce/ingredients did you buy or obtain today (2025)?

Car dealership where we got the car today is surprisingly close to our Amish doughnut dealer:

Dinner fork is to show scale.

Trip to the bank to provide my mechanic with even more $$$ for a new clutch. It's not completely gone, but he says it's on the way out, so since I'm investing my entire retirement funds on renewing the car, I thought "why not?"
At the corner supermarket, I topped up with a huge loaf of bread, some dog food, and 3 bars of "bean-to-bar" Venezuelan chocolate. That should see me through the weekend!

Aldi is the new grocery habit! View attachment 126569
We've converted you to the Aldi-other side! It's rather nice isn't it? Oooohh look at that lovely thin asparagus, my favorite is the thin stalks by far. I also love wandering through the Aldi finds aisle. I found some great smaller wooden cutting boards and a variety of other stuff that was great for a fraction of the price I'd find elsewhere. Oh and I love their chocolates! When my MIL was alive I regularly got her those chocolates at holidays and her birthday as an addition to other gifts. I am really fond of their toffee chocolate for myself, but she loved that dark sea salt chocolate the best I think. It does pair well with red wine. It's also really nice that you can either bring your own reusable bags or pick up a few of their boxes to carry things home in. Less plastic waste in the world is a great thing. Oh, and no worries about having a cart slamming into your car on a windy day...I could extoll the virtues of Aldi for longer...but I must say I won't be buying their meat again, at least not the lamb.

Not really converted. I've been there but Walmart is mostly the go to in Rome. Aside from the two Walmarts and the Aldi there is a Kroger and Publix. The last two are way pricey for me unless I'm looking for something specific.

The Aldi is *really* small. There aren't a lot of choices. As long as I go with the intent of produce, canned goods, cheese, deli style meats, and dairy I'll make it. They don't have diddly for cleaning goods which is okay since I make my own soaps, except for Dawn, and nada for paper goods but those I buy in bulk once a year. Freezer items are good as are chip type snacks.

I eat pretty cheap and simple so in the long haul it will work out. 👍

We went to Restaurant Depot Thursday to get a couple cases of San Pellegrino and to get some kind of seafood, stone crab claws, crawfish, oysters or scallops. Craig came out with a case of oysters, 82. I scrubbed them and bagged/portioned them and they all went in the freezer. So, we'll be having grilled oysters NOLA style with a compound butter in a few days. That's my favorite way to have them and the way they are cooked, there's only a very, very tiny difference between fresh or fresh frozen, plus they are a lot easier to open after freezing.

I used to split a case with the plumber from work that we'd get fresh off the truck at a Thai grocery in Las Vegas. That was the first time I ever had to shuck them but it was worth every penny!

Yeah, and 80 would be about the amount Craig would've slurped down in his younger years. The shuckers were hard pressed to keep up with him and his friends.
Those things are soooo gooooood! I love their grilled (BBQ) oysters. The first time I went there I thought that they actually put BBQ sauce on the oysters, eww, and boy was I set straight quickly and very glad to be wrong. I might have been able to keep up with Craig in my younger years. I know I couldn't eat that much now, but in my 20s, quite possibly.

Yeah, we have several Aldi stores and a few are larger than others, but it's still limited. I try to get the majority of my produce and dairy there plus a few shelf stable things like you, and then other stuff I hit Walmart or one of our small regional grocery stores if there is a sale (like that ground beef score I made last week). I tend to get a lot of my cleaning supplies at Walmart or the dollar stores, but I use vinegar and water for cleaning windows and shiny appliances most of the time. And then I get my Asian stuff (seaweed sheets, sushi rice, etc.) at the mom and pop Asian markets. I really have been meaning to go to the Hispanic market for some supplies because everywhere else either gouges me or doesn't carry the items, but I am not comfortable going into that part of town as it's a high crime area. I'll have to drag my husband there with me I guess.
