We had a Lancashire Peeler at home when I was a boy; that's the type shown by Mrs Dangermouse in Post #2, I think they were standard issue in British households for decades, and when I left home I got one for myself
I don't think there were any other types at that time; and if they were, they certainly weren't very common
I also used a simple paring/peeling knife
Years later I discovered the Y Peeler, so now I use a Y peeler and a paring knife
