As in you could use it for a trivet now in a pinch while it is unused for its true purpose, but after it's used you will not want to use it for anything but its true intended use.

Nope. It's got handles cause it gets hot and you might need to move it while in use or hold it steady if you need to add more stuff. As noted, it's about 2 inches/5 cm tall, and, as additional hints, around 8 inches/20 cm across. Those are channels BTW.
