A roasted baby beetroot? a very burnt chestnut? the black radish that I can't remember the name of?

Whatever it is, it'd be a very welcome relief if it's not meat in one guise or another.

Its not meat. Nor is it any of the things you mention. Its very delicious though!
 
Black pudding (even the white bits are black).
