Where have all my lids gone?

We seem to have a lid monster, a spanner monster [in the garage] and I used to have a car that ate pens [no matter how many I put in it you could never find one]. I had a friend who solved these problems by simply laying out two of everything - one to use and one for the monsters. It worked ok until the monsters got greedy.
