Would you be prepared to slaughter an animal for meat?

I once saw a pig being slaughtered for meat, & I stopped eating pork for three years!! No, I wouldn't do it! Especially if i became friends with the animal! How on earth could I eat any animal after becoming friends with him?! :eek:
I had the exact same trauma when I was a kid...it is in another thread.

I do understand people need to do to obtain food, it is just not for me.

I had no problem spearfishing, though Craig always did the cutting up part because he's good at it. I most definitely am not. I have dispatched lobster and cleaned live geoduck and urchins, as well as clams, etc.

I could butcher a chicken, and think i could a pig or cow if I hadn't raised the latter 2. If I had, I think it would have to be a starvation issue.
Exactly, in extremes, like starvation, for my kid? I'd probably kill a dragon too. The Mom preservation instinct would outweigh any issues. But that is an extreme, hopefully.

We have a processing place here, just a small family business, and they kill and butcher on-site, so they have the killing room and then a little storefront/office for conducting business.

I went out there to see about a pig roast, because they provide those, and I made the mistake of going into the slaughtering area and not the office. Brought back a lot of unpleasant memories, that's for sure.

I absolutely would never be able to kill an animal. I don't even have the heart to kill insects. I just usher them outside with a piece of paper.
It's funny, because I'm the same way with bugs. Even houseflies, I try and shoo them out an open window or door. :laugh:

I kill house spiders or cockroaches, if there are any in the flat, because I am too affraid of them escaping and critting around at night...and they do not belong in a flat.but it is never easy...oh gosh

In my world, a cockroach is a reason to list one's house for sale. ;-) I don't do cockroaches. :thumbsdown:
 
Don't read the spoiler if you are squeamish about killing an animal, seriously. I'm writing about the 1 thing that freaks me out when preparing shellfish that I have just dispatched.

When you are preparing lobster, live diver scallops, and geoduck just after dispatching them, you can feel the muscles twitching as you are slicing them, even sometimes with fish that have just been caught.
Oh Gracious...that is my nightmare.

There are some bugs I will escort to the window and out yes, stinky Martin for one, but it is never easy. We get lots of them at school. Coworker taught me a plastic cup and cardboard technique, so you never actually touch those and do not harm them...

I understand your resentment.
In my hood they appear now and then, last ones, tje only ones were 2 y ago, 2 or 3, our tenants representative gave us a poison gel, and they were gone, luckily. The eek is awful.
But selling my flat, my own flat for thst?no, that would not be an option.
They also do regular building sprays against cs and deratizations...so most of the time we are good.

I have killed chickens when I stayed on a smallholding as a teenager. It was difficult but I made myself do it. I would like to visit a slaughterhouse, as a lover of red meat I think I should see the process first hand, though it would be entirely inappropriate for me as someone with no experience to actually despatch a large animal, simply because it would be cruel to them and they deserve the job to be done expertly and quickly.

Once the pandemic is done I intend to do a short butchery course just to have an appreciation of how to break down a whole carcass.
 
I don't have moral/ethical any issues with slaughtering an animal myself. In a situation like a cajun Boucherie, where a community comes together to slaughter a pig, and different people cook different parts of the pig into cajun foods, I would be happy to be the guy who pulls the trigger. I'd have no problem doing my share of the butchering and cooking.

The reason I don't hunt large animals such as deer and wild boar (besides not being fond of venison) is that I live alone, so what would I do with all that meat. Remember, hunting is one reason I don't like animal food waste. So, it is much more practical for me to buy small cuts of meat in a grocery store.

BTW, I save a lot of money, and cut food waste, by shopping the meat department's "Manager's Special" section, which has meat that is almost at the "sell by" date. That meat will get tossed in a dumpster if nobody buys it. Even if a steak is starting to oxidize (turn brown/grey), it is safe to eat, and will taste fine.

Tasty, when I went duck hunting, we took our ducks to a local butcher/processor. They have machines that quickly pluck the feathers -- doing it by hand is a PITA.

I would..I have seen it done a few times before...and, I make a living cutting meat, so..that's a no brainer..I think if people were hungry and desparate, they would just about slaughter anything. Back in the 60's, rural people didn't have access to very many fresh and consumer products, so meat was the main staple to get through the winter.. I come from two farming families...I remember parents coming home with large pieces of animals like pork and beef, chickens that were killed minutes before we left for home,etc...they would divide them up and take them to their homes in coolers and ice boxes to finish processing...so, we would finish skinning, deboning, wrapping etc...Back in the early 70's, I had to shoot a dog that had rabies one summer at my uncles farm..The older guys were gone and I was alone with my aunt..the dog was roaming around the barn yard and coming close to the house..itit didn't really bother me because it was very sick and needed to go....I also had to crush a rat with a hockey stick one time..that's another story for another time..Canadian problems...

Well, there absolutely should be people around who Can and know How.
A large part of the globe population is carni/omni, so like any other professions, it should not be deficitary.

Like surgeons, I would not be able to perform that, but it is essential that there are people who can and will and will do it well.

I once did that with a bat! He flew into the apt & I was trying to get him out. Rather than kill him, I chased him downstairs & opened the door for him to fly out, which he did.:wink:
